You Ask — We Answer

COMMON QUESTIONS

Have a particular question you want to ask? At Sports, Back & Pain Management Clinic, we’re here to guide you every step of the way. There’s no such thing as a stupid question when it comes to your health. Check out the answers to some our patients’ frequently asked questions below. If there’s something on your mind that isn’t mentioned here, please get in touch for more information.

WHAT IS PHYSICAL THERAPY?

Physical therapy is a natural treatment method with few if any side effects that provides a long-term solution to your problem(s).  Physical Therapists are neuromuscular specialists.  70% of your body is muscle, thus physical therapy can address many pain, movement, balance, and injury issues.

WHAT SHOULD I WEAR TO MY FIRST AND SUBSEQUENT VISITS?

It is a good idea to wear loose fitting athletic clothes.  If you forget, we have shorts and t-shirts you can use during the visit.

WHAT SHOULD I EXPECT DURING MY FIRST VISIT?

Your first visit will involve a thorough evaluation by the licensed physical therapist.  The therapist will ask you questions, observe you doing some movements perform tests and take measurements.  Based on this information, the therapist will determine the underlying cause for your symptoms and develop a treatment program to eliminate or minimize your problem

WILL THE TREATMENTS HURT?

You can expect some soreness after the first few visits because the staff will be working on the injured area.  However, enclosed in your folder are instructions on how to make flexible hot and cold packs.  In addition, you can take over the counter medication if needed.

WHAT WILL I BE DOING DURING EACH VISIT?

Physical Therapists use a variety of treatments depending on their skill level and experience.  At our clinic and because of the extensive skill set and experience of the staff, we use the following treatments depending on what is needed: Manual Therapy, Manipulation, Mobilization, Trigger Point Dry Needling, Targeted exercise, Electrical Stimulation, Traction, Ultra-sound and Hot/Cold Treatment.

SHOULD I DO ANYTHING AT HOME?

Yes!  We will provide you with instructions to help you with your home exercise program.  It is very important that you consistently perform the home exercises as there is only so much we can do during your weekly visits.

HOW FREQUENT ARE THE VISITS AND HOW LONG DOES TREATMENT TAKE?

On average, patients come in twice a week for 6-8 weeks.  Of course, this varies depending on the severity of your problem, how long the problem has existed, whether you attend your visits regularly, and whether you consistently perform your home exercises.

CAN I PURCHASE EQUIPMENT?

In most cases, no equipment is required.  However, if you want to purchase exercise bands, exercise balls, electrical stimulation units, and so forth we have them available at a nominal cost.

WHAT HAPPENS IF I FORGET TO CANCEL 24 HOURS IN ADVANCE OR FORGET TO CANCEL AT ALL?

Failing to call 24 hours in advance of a scheduled appointment, results in a charge of $25.  We understand that things do come up and thus do not charge for the first occurrence.  However, all further occurrences will incur a $25 charge.  Our intent is not to make money but to deter last minutes changes and enable us the time to schedule another patient who needs the care in the appointment slot.  If a patient fails to show for an appointment without notice, all future appointments will be removed and a $25 fee assessed to their account.  The patient may re-schedule appointments on a “first come, first serve basis”.

DOES THE CLINIC OFFER STUDENT SHADOWING OPPORTUNITIES?

No! Unfortunately, due to the current size and patient schedule of the Sports, Back and Pain Management Clinic we do not offer shadowing opportunities for local students. However, our clinic staff is usually comprised of current college students who are hoping to pursue a career in the medical field once they graduate. If students are interested in being hired on staff to work with patients directly, or in our administration, they can submit their resume to sbpmcoffice@gmail.com. Thank you!
